Digital bank PalmPay is expanding its youth empowerment programmes to help young Nigerians build digital skills, improve financial literacy and gain workplace experience as the economy becomes increasingly technology-driven.
The Managing Director of PalmPay Nigeria, Chika Nwosu, made the commitment as Nigeria joined countries around the world to mark International Youth Day.
Nwosu said Nigeria’s young population is a major economic asset, but unlocking its potential would require greater access to relevant skills, knowledge and opportunities.
“At PalmPay, we are committed to equipping young Nigerians to learn, earn and thrive in an increasingly digital economy. We believe that investing in young people today is an investment in a stronger, more inclusive Nigeria,” he said.
The company’s initiatives include its Graduate Trainee Programme, which provides young graduates with workplace exposure and opportunities to develop professional skills.
PalmPay also runs a financial literacy programme for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, providing practical guidance on saving, budgeting, spending and protecting personal finances.
Through its Purple Woman initiative, the company also provides young women with opportunities for internships, learning and professional development.
The programmes come amid concerns over the digital skills gap among young Nigerians. According to UNICEF, about seven per cent of Nigerians aged 15 to 24 possess basic information and communication technology skills.
PalmPay said the gap highlights the need to equip young people with skills that can improve their employability and enable them to participate in the growing digital economy.
The fintech company said its approach to youth empowerment goes beyond corporate social responsibility, focusing on practical skills, financial capability and access to professional opportunities.
It said young people who gain workplace exposure, digital knowledge and sound financial habits would be better positioned to build careers, start businesses and contribute to economic growth.
PalmPay said it would continue investing in programmes that support youth employability, financial literacy and digital skills development as part of its contribution to building a workforce prepared for the demands of Nigeria’s digital economy.
