Tupendane Africa Foundation is expanding community-based child-protection work in Tanzania through its Mtoto Salama initiative, focusing on abuse prevention, safer environments for children and improved awareness of reporting and support channels.
The programme seeks to engage parents, community members and local stakeholders in identifying risks to children and responding earlier when abuse or exploitation occurs.
Child-protection systems often struggle with underreporting because survivors may fear stigma, retaliation or disbelief. In some communities, families may also lack clear information about where to report abuse or how to access psychosocial, medical and legal support.
Community-based organisations can help bridge that gap by working through trusted local structures and adapting safeguarding messages to the language and realities of the people they serve.
The Mtoto Salama initiative places emphasis on prevention as well as response. That includes helping adults recognise warning signs, encouraging children to understand personal safety and strengthening links between communities and formal protection services.
Child abuse has long-term consequences for physical health, mental wellbeing, education and social development. Preventing violence against children is therefore closely connected to broader goals around school participation, public health and poverty reduction.
The foundation’s work also reflects a wider shift in safeguarding practice: protecting children is increasingly treated as a responsibility shared by families, schools, community organisations, public agencies and service providers rather than as an issue for social workers alone.
Sustained impact will depend on whether awareness activities are connected to functioning referral mechanisms and whether survivors can access confidential and appropriate support when cases are identified.
For Tanzania’s nonprofit sector, initiatives like Mtoto Salama demonstrate the role local organisations can play in turning national child-protection commitments into practical community-level action.
