Adamawa Opens Procurement Bids for 300 Tractors to Boost Agricultural Productivity

Adamawa State in northeastern Nigeria has opened procurement bids for 300 tractors, NPK fertiliser and processed rice in a move aimed at strengthening agricultural production, supporting farmers and improving the state’s agricultural sector.

The bid-opening exercise took place on 19 October 2026 and brought together officials of the Adamawa State Ministry of Agriculture, representatives of bidding companies, civil society organisations, the state’s Bureau for Public Procurement and members of the media.

According to the Ministry, the procurement is divided into three lots covering agricultural inputs, mechanisation equipment and processed rice.

The first lot involves the supply of assorted NPK 20:10:10 fertiliser to support crop production. The second covers 300 tractors equipped with 75-horsepower engines, alongside agricultural implements. The third involves the supply of parboiled, destoned and polished rice grains.

Mr Zailani Adamu, Secretary of the Tender Board and Procurement Officer, disclosed that more than 10 companies submitted bids for the procurement. He explained that the bids were opened publicly to promote transparency, encourage competition and ensure compliance with established procurement procedures.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry and Chairperson of the Tender Board, Dr Heidi E. Sunday, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a transparent and competitive procurement process. She assured participating companies that all bidders would be given a fair opportunity in accordance with the applicable procedures.

A representative of the Adamawa State Bureau for Public Procurement, Mallam Yunusa, also commended the Ministry for conducting an open bidding exercise, noting that competition among suppliers could help the government secure value for public funds.

The planned procurement is expected to address some of the practical challenges facing agricultural production, particularly access to machinery and essential farming inputs.

The acquisition of 300 tractors and accompanying implements could improve access to mechanised farming, helping farmers undertake land preparation and other farm operations more efficiently. Meanwhile, the supply of NPK fertiliser is intended to support crop production, while the processed rice component covers the provision of food products.

However, the extent of the benefits will depend on the successful completion of the procurement process, timely delivery of the supplies and the arrangements made to ensure that the intended beneficiaries can access them.

Dr Sunday warned prospective successful contractors against poor performance, unnecessary delays and breaches of contractual obligations. She emphasised that quality assurance, professionalism and timely delivery would be essential requirements.

The Ministry confirmed that the submitted bids would be forwarded to the appropriate technical and evaluation committee for detailed assessment. The opening of bids does not constitute a contract award, as the proposals must first pass through the required evaluation procedures.

The procurement forms part of broader efforts to strengthen accountability and value for money in public spending on agriculture.

For farmers and agricultural businesses in Adamawa State, the initiative presents a potential opportunity to improve production capacity and strengthen agricultural operations, provided the equipment and inputs are delivered and distributed effectively.
