The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, in collaboration with the National Horticultural Research Institute (NIHORT), has trained 500 women and young people in tomato, okra and Telfairia farming across selected communities in Ogun State.
The four-day programme, held from August 4 to 7, provided participants with practical knowledge in vegetable production, farm economics, marketing and record-keeping.
As part of the initiative, participants received essential farming equipment, including seed planters, plastic crates, watering cans, rain boots and raincoats, to support their agricultural activities and enhance productivity.
The training aimed to equip women and young farmers with improved cultivation techniques, while providing them with the knowledge and basic resources needed to increase yields and manage their farms more effectively.
Speaking at the programme, NIHORT Executive Director, Prof. Muhammed Attanda, represented by Dr Joel Akinfasoye, Training Coordinator at Hort Consultancy Ventures Limited, stressed the nutritional and economic value of tomato, okra and Telfairia.
He urged participants to make full use of the knowledge gained and incorporate the improved farming practices into their operations.
Participants, including Showunmi Afolabi and Adedoyin Remilekun, commended the initiative, describing the training as valuable and beneficial to their farming activities.
The intervention is expected to strengthen the skills and productive capacity of women and young farmers while improving access to practical agricultural knowledge and essential farming tools within their communities.
