The Bauchi State Government in Nigeria has launched the Bauchi State Innovation and Startup Law 2026 and graduated more than 100 young people from a cybersecurity training programme, as part of efforts to strengthen the digital economy, promote innovation and expand employment opportunities.

The initiatives were announced on 20 October 2026 during a ceremony in Bauchi, where Governor Bala Mohammed, represented by his deputy, Auwal Jatau, highlighted the state’s commitment to using technology to drive economic development and create opportunities for young people.

The newly introduced law establishes a framework for supporting and regulating technology-driven startups, encouraging innovation and building an environment in which entrepreneurs can develop sustainable businesses. It also provides for the establishment of a Bauchi State Startup Fund to support the state’s emerging innovation ecosystem.

The cybersecurity graduates completed training under the Cybernation programme, implemented in partnership with Canadian technology company Protexxa. The programme aims to equip young people with internationally recognised cybersecurity skills and prepare them for employment in the growing digital economy.

According to the state government, the partnership includes a commitment to secure employment for at least 80 per cent of the graduates. However, specific details about the placement timeline and the organisations expected to recruit them have not been disclosed.

The initiative comes amid growing demand for cybersecurity professionals as businesses, financial institutions, government agencies and other organisations increasingly depend on digital systems to deliver services and manage sensitive information.

Cybersecurity skills are becoming increasingly important in protecting digital infrastructure against online fraud, data breaches and other cyber threats. The graduates are expected to contribute to improving digital security across public and private institutions while supporting safer online practices within their communities.

The Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Abubakar Suleiman, congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to continue developing their professional skills through practical experience, further training and industry certifications.

He also urged them to help local businesses and communities understand online security risks and adopt safer digital practices.

Protexxa’s Country Representative, Abi Hafsat, commended the state government for investing in youth development and described the programme as an example of how collaboration between government and the private sector can prepare young people for emerging opportunities in technology.

Beyond skills development, the Bauchi State Innovation and Startup Law 2026 is intended to create a more supportive environment for technology entrepreneurs. Through institutional support, potential incentives and investment opportunities, the law seeks to encourage young innovators to transform ideas into businesses that address local challenges.

The proposed Startup Fund could provide an additional avenue for eligible businesses to access support, although details concerning its funding, administration and application requirements have not yet been disclosed.

The government has also approved a zero Right of Way charge for broadband deployment across Bauchi State. The measure is intended to encourage telecommunications companies and internet service providers to expand broadband infrastructure, particularly in underserved communities.

By reducing the cost associated with deploying broadband infrastructure, the state hopes to attract greater investment in connectivity and improve access to digital services for residents in rural and urban areas.

Improved internet access could help young people participate in online learning, access remote employment opportunities, establish digital businesses and connect with wider markets. It could also support the growth of technology startups by improving the infrastructure needed to develop and deliver digital products and services.

The startup law, cybersecurity programme and broadband policy form part of a broader strategy to strengthen Bauchi’s digital economy by developing skilled workers while creating an environment that encourages entrepreneurship and investment.

For the initiative to achieve its intended impact, effective implementation of the law, clear access arrangements for the Startup Fund, continued investment in digital infrastructure and the delivery of the promised job placements will be essential.

If these measures translate into sustainable employment and stronger support for technology businesses, Bauchi could expand opportunities for young people while strengthening its capacity to participate in Nigeria’s growing digital economy.
