Sahara Group Foundation Expands Recycling Program to Jigawa and Kaduna, Boosts Green Jobs.

The Sahara Group Foundation has expanded its waste-to-wealth initiative with the launch of two new Sahara Go Recycling Hubs in Jigawa and Kaduna states, creating additional opportunities for income generation while promoting sustainable waste management in Northern Nigeria.

The newly commissioned facilities are located at Gidan Hakimi in Shuwarin Local Government Area of Jigawa State and Asharami Retail Station in Badiko, Kaduna South Local Government Area of Kaduna State. They represent the Foundation’s 21st and 22nd recycling hubs nationwide, as well as its second and third recycling centres in Northern Nigeria.

Commissioned on 14 and 15 July 2026, the projects were delivered in collaboration with the King’s Council, Shuwarin, and Asharami Synergy, respectively.

According to the Foundation, the initiative is designed to transform waste into economic opportunities by enabling households to earn income through recycling while encouraging environmental conservation. The programme forms part of the organisation’s Sahara Beyond XXX sustainability vision, which focuses on creating long-term, community-driven value across Nigeria.

Speaking at the launch, Director of Sahara Group Foundation, Chidilim Menakaya, said the expansion demonstrates the organisation’s commitment to scaling practical environmental solutions through strong partnerships with local stakeholders.

“By partnering with institutions and sister companies that understand local needs and realities, we are building a recycling ecosystem that communities can own, sustain and benefit from over the long term she said.

The commissioning ceremonies were attended by government officials, traditional leaders, community representatives and partners. Among those present were members of the King’s Council, the Jigawa State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Nura I. Doka, the Chairman of Shuwarin Local Government Area, Hon. Abdulhamid Ibrahim Balago, community leaders and residents. In Kaduna, representatives of Asharami Synergy and the management of the Badiko Retail Station also participated in the event.

Speaking during the inauguration in Jigawa, Alhaji Bashir Abdullahi, Sarkin Gabas and Hakimin Shuwarin, described the recycling hub as a practical solution to the community’s longstanding waste management challenges.

He noted that residents had previously relied on burning or indiscriminate dumping of waste but said the new facility now provides young people and women with an opportunity to generate income from recyclable materials while helping to keep the environment clean.

At the Kaduna event, Aliyu Abdullahi Mabai, Filling Station Manager at Asharami Retail Station, Badiko, said hosting the recycling hub reflects the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable business practices.

He explained that the facility offers customers and surrounding communities a convenient way to recycle waste while supporting Asharami Synergy’s broader sustainability goals.

The Foundation also announced plans to establish another Sahara Go Recycling Hub in Kano State in the coming weeks following recent discussions with the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, who expressed support for the initiative.

Since its launch, the Sahara Go Recycling Program has facilitated the recycling of more than 1,000 tonnes of waste and created direct and indirect economic opportunities for over 2,000 people across Nigeria, reinforcing the Foundation’s commitment to environmental sustainability and inclusive community development.
